I know it's early, but is anyone going to Dallas for the $MU game?
I received my tickets in the mail last week and will be there. Any suggestions on good places to eat in Dallas?

I've been thinking about it... Before the season I was definitely going. I want to see their new stadium. Now though it feels like a lot of work to go.

Was at their new facility a few years ago ('05, IIRC). I remember it being really, really nice.

Their facility is nice. Can't remember if it's been open for 2, 3 or 4 games against Rice. I think 3, as 2001 was at the Cotton Bowl I believe.

If you like pizza or old restaurants, try Campisi's on Mockingbird, east of North Central Expressway. Jack Ruby used to hang out there (no kiddin'). There's lots of other stuff up and down Greenville Avenue in the area.

I45 or DFW Owl can probably provide more input regarding eating.

There is a DART station close by and SMU runs free shuttles to the game from there. Parking is free at the station lot.

I lived in the M-street area just across Central (75) from U-Park for several years back in the '90s - great area (admittedly more for the younger scene, which I was back at the time, but still tons to do).

I was there also, as well as in 1999. It's easy to get 1999 and 2001 confused, as we were expecting to win both.

Haven't missed that road trip since 1997, IIRC.

I won't be there for this one. Due to the rain in the area, our soccer season is compressed into 9 to 11 games during the first 12 days of November, including our post season cup the weekend of the 7th.

72. S.M.U. (3-4, 2-1)
79. U.T.E.P. (3-4, 2-1)
99. Tulane (2-5, 0-4)
113. Rice (0-8, 0-4)

East

54. Marshall (5-3, 3-1)

RE: $MU
My wife and I will be there, albeit without our Rice shirts on (or at least when we pick up our tickets). It will be the first Saturday I've had off since the summer, but my wife has to give the SAT in the morning.

There are a couple of places/bars near SMU on Henderson St. that we love to eat. Louie's has great pizza, and once, when Louie's was closed, we stopped at Vickery Park Bar for their Sunday brunch. The migas were great, and the hash browns with homemade Sriracha ketchup are excellent.
http://vickeryparkbar.com/index.html

Not exactly in the University Park area, but just off I-35 south of downtown (near the Methodist Hospital) in Oak Cliff, there is a Mexican food restuarant called Tejano's. If I remember the story right, it is in an old El Chico buidling, started by the one Cuellar brother who did not go into the El Chico business. It was a popular place for the cast and crew of JFK, including Kevin Costner. It is not far from the Jefferson St and the Texas Theatre. Also in that area is Norma's Cafe, a great place for "down-home" cooking.

With all this being said, we'll probably go through the drive-thru at Carl's Jr. in the Love's truck stop on I-45 in Wilmer. My wife LOVES their hamburgers.

BTW, honk as you go past Rice High School...we'll be inside.

EXCELLENT! My son told me we were going last summer already. Even though he's just 13, I don't mind him being so direct about it with me since it's only a short drive over from Hudson Oaks, and unless I have something very important going on I'd like to go anyway.

This is my first post here. I will apologize in advance if I make mistakes.

I am glad to see that at least some of you are coming up for the game. I am primarily a Mustang fan,but root for the Owls when not going head to head with my Mustangs. I am sorry the season is not going well, but I believe the team needs support all the more because they are down right now.

If anyone else is thinking about coming, please do everything you can to do so and support the Owls. It's not a bad drive from Houston. I will be making it myself early Saturday morning. They need you!!

I would like to be the first to welcome you to Dallas, SMU, and Ford Stadium. I am looking forward to a good game next Saturday.

I will be there, possibly with family. There is an official alumni "Pregame Fiesta" before the game (12-1:30pm) that I will likely attend as well. (I think they have had beer/wine in previous years, which may help prepare people for what they might see at the game.)

Details and registration:

https://online.alumni.rice.edu/default.a...entID=1157

The deadline to sign up is Monday.

Bishop Blvd. is a pretty good pregame scene. It will be Homecoming again for SMU (it seems like we are always their Homecoming game) so there should be a lot of Ponies in the area at various tents/tailgates.

SMU pulls off upset at Tulsa today. They have 4 wins now with 4 to play. Looks like their 25 year bowl drought will likely end. Should be a decent crowd next week.

SMU is better than we are. In particular, they are better on defense than we are. It's discouraging that they've passed us so quickly.

Maybe we have a shot against Tulane.

Temple beats Navy at Navy...oh well E Michigan is still 0'fer (well actually they are down 42 in the 2nd Q to Ark) but New Mexico is up on SDSU in the 2nd Q so they may get their first win today. But UAB won at UTEP. And on the Tulsa Board the Toad is catching some major heat...why they are even giving Kragthorpe credit for getting the program untracked....lol

At least Vandy is hanging tough with Ga Tech, 28-21 Tech so far. That makes us look a little better.

Edit update: 35-31 Ga Tech mid 3rd.

You know SMU has beaten Rice and TCU in years when the record said the Mustangs shouldn't have had a chance.

I think turnabout is fair play.

Time for payback for 1997, 1999, and 2001 . . . . . . any one else feel the same way?

I hope I'm wrong, but I think were going to have to play WAY better than we have so far this year to have a chance to win a game.

We appreciate the concern.

She's doing really well. She went back to work in August, and she's cutback from last year, somewhat. Fortunately, we were able to go to the first two home games - love night games at HRS. After missing the bowl game (first one I've missed in my lifetime and having to watch it on a laptop in the hospital), we are just happy to be able to go any game, no matter what the team's record is.

Thanks again, and here's to beating SMU!

Apparently Tulsa went for it on 4th and 18 from SMU's 44 with 5-1/2 minutes to play down by 7. SMU's subsequent drive was 56 yards for the game-clinching TD.

That's one of those tough coaching decisions. Best idea is to avoid 4th and 18's.

They put Kinne in to quick-kick, which they had done several times before in the game, with much success. SMU had not dropped anyone back to receive the punt earlier in the game. On that particular play, SMU dropped Emmanuel Sanders back to receive the punt. The read on that play is to run a pass play if the defense drops a man back, because a man will be open (matchups are bad because the offense is essentially playing 11 on 10). Kinne had a man open, but Margus Hunt swatted the ball away at the line of scrimmage.

Padron looked a lot better than Bo. Had you guys played this well against Navy, it would've definitely been a victory.

I am glad that you beat Tulsa.

We do have a good defense and the offense showed promise yesterday with Padron at qb instead of Bo Levi. I hope that June shows he truly does know what he's doing by leaving Padron at qb for the rest of the season.

I'm sorry you are so discouraged, I truly wish Rice was doing better, but I want that to wait until after next Saturday.

Thank you, we are also glad we beat Tulsa. I for one am happy we beat them for more than one reason.....one involving a certain coach I'm not very fond of.

You are right about Padron looking better than Bo Levi. That was the missing element against Navy. That and perhaps some questionable play calling.

I still believe the Owls will give us a good game. I'm looking forward to it!

RE: $MU
somehow the "we are young" excuse isn't bothering June and the Ponies...not to mention "our qb" is hurt excuse. Congrats to SMU looks like things are starting to jell after 1 1/2 years under Jones.

I hope all of you are able to make it to the game on Saturday. Let me know if I can provide any suggestions for places to stay, places to eat, etc.

The deadline to sign up is Monday.

Bishop Blvd. is a pretty good pregame scene. It will be Homecoming again for SMU (it seems like we are always their Homecoming game) so there should be a lot of Ponies in the area at various tents/tailgates.

bump (deadline for signing up is tonight)

Yep... three things can happen when you punt... and 2 of them are bad.

I would have gone for the FG 05-stirthepot Your soccer player would have made it
