University of Arkansas Students Win Solar Splash Boat Competition

July 9, 2002 Posted at: 9:30 p.m. CST By Sean Bolen Fayetteville Ark.--A team of students from the University of Arkansas won a world championship boat race by using the power of the sun. The team just came back from the Solar Splash competition in New York where they competed with students from all over the world and won.

The team says their solar electric boat shows that one day we may be able to use the power of the sun in every day life... For a greener more environmentally sound energy source.

Team leader K. R. Olejniczak says the solar electric boat demonstrates that a machine can be environmentally friendly: "I think it's basically an awareness for the engineer to understand viable solutions but you also have to account for environmental concerns."

The boat has a bank of batteries charged by the suns power or by ordinary house current. When fully charged the boats two motors produce 30-hp and can reach a speed of almost 30-mph.
