Recruiting: UA to put newcomers on display
FAYETTEVILLE -- The Fourth of July has come and gone, which means football season is just around the corner.

Arkansas' newcomers will report in early August, minus a few who signed in February but failed to qualify academically.

The ones expected to report include Independence (Kan.) Community College linebacker Marcus Whitmore, 6-1, 220, 4.49 seconds in the 40-yard dash; Little Rock Central running back-wide receiver Dedrick Poole, 5-10, 189, 4.4; Spring (Texas) Westfield offensive tackle Tony Ugoh, 6-5, 280, 5.0; and Plano (Texas) West free safety Vickiel Vaughn, 6-1, 180, 4.45.

According to sources close to Arkansas, Osceola wide receiver Chris Baker, 6-2, 179, 4.39, and Beggs (Okla.) defensive lineman Charles Walker, 6-3, 275, 4.8, failed to qualify academically. Baker is reportedly exploring his options, while Walker is expected to attend Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Memphis Whitehaven tailback Eugene Cousart, 5-10, 220, 4.4, failed to qualify academically and is deciding between enrolling at the UA as a part-time student or attending a junior college.

It also appears Shreveport Evangel defensive end Reggie Banks, 6-4, 280, 5.0, will be a partial qualifier at Arkansas.

Arkansas lost senior middle linebacker Jermaine Petty to the NFL, and Whitmore will vie to replace the All-American. Whitmore recorded 136 tackles as a sophomore, including 105 unassisted, and had 22 tackles for losses, 6 sacks and 4 interceptions.

Arkansas also will take a long look at West Monroe (La.) High's Lucas Jackson, 6-01
