Before you guys read below, first read the drivel from our good friend Wally Hall at the Demo-Zette.

<a href="http://www.ardemgaz.com/cgi/textonly.plx?name=spt/C1wally23.asp" target="_blank">http://www.ardemgaz.com/cgi/textonly.plx?name=spt/C1wally23.asp</a>

Now for..the rest of the story.

Unsatisfied with Wally's answers, the same people who wrote the sports editor wrote this moderator back for answers. Here's what I had to say.

Dear Moderator:
I was wondering why Wally doesn't give more coverage to NASCAR racing? It is the fastest-growing sport in the country.
Stumped in Searcy.
Dear Stumped:
The reason they haven't in the past is because Wally Hall does not like NASCAR. Wally will not admit that, but let's face fact. Wally DOES like horse racing and amateur softball, both of which take up large portions of the Demo-Zette during the dog days of summer. He neglects NASCAR because he simply doesn't like it. This also explains why Managing Editor David Bailey had a meeting with him and chewed him out, making Wally promise that 'it should improve'.

Dear Moderator:
After Wally embarrassed yourself before the first two legs of the Triple Crown, who are YOU picking for the Belmont Stakes? I need a winner.
Greedy in Gurdon.
Dear Greedy:
I didn't like War Emblem's finish in the Preakness, but I think he's a horse who just uses the effort to get and stay ahead, and not go the maximum if he doesn't need to. Call me sentimental, but I'll call a Triple Crown winner this year. War Emblem by 3 lengths.

Dear Moderator:
Much has been said on the radio about the Razorback quarterback controversy, but I haven't seen you address it. Why not, and who do you think should be the starter?
Also, could you address the cost effectiveness of Arkansas State continuing to play football despite losing $1.5 million a year.
Aaron, Little Rock
Dear Aaron:
I think what Houston Nutt would love best is to have Jackson or Sorahan at QB and move the 6'6'' Matt Jones to WR, causing huge mismatches and helping to spark the offensive attack. My hope is to see Jackson at QB and Jones at WR, with some trick plays with Jones at QB. If Jackson or Sorahan can't install a good balance of option and passing, look for Jones to play a lot of QB again. As for the ASU situation, yes there are programs in worse shape (UAB is $8 mil in debt). The difference though is that UAB isn't taking money away from academics to pay for their 'dream' athletic program. They're just busting tail to create interest in central Alabama. ASU is going the wrong way with this, first by taking money away from academics (that's just WRONG), and secondly by letting their jealousy of UA boil into hatred. If ASU wants 18,000 in the seats, rest assured they need some Razorback fans in NE Arkansas to go to their games while the HOGS are on the road.

Moderator:
Did you ever play sports?
Jock from Jacksonville.
Jock:
Yes, I did, and I think every child needs to. Youth sports, if the parents don't make scenes and idiots of themselves, is a very positive influence for everyone that participates.

Moderator:
I know this is an age-old question, but what is the truth: Why don't Arkansas and Arkansas State play in football, and why don't all the Division I schools play in basketball?
Joe in Jonesboro.
Joe:
Picture the situation here. You have Arkansas, who has a virtual monopoly of state media, state attention, fan support in the state, sales of merchandise in the state, and the #1 school the majority of HS recruits in this state dream of playing for. Now, why would UA, in any shape, form, or fashion, risk giving that up by playing a school who dreams of taking that from them? That's what we call "bad business" Joe. Wally says it's 50s logic, but he's wrong. That's everyday logic. Athletic programs are businesses too, and it's bad business to fool around with a good thing. To really persuade me to have that game played, ASU would need to average at least 40,000 for their home games, move to a tougher conference, and start winning games.
As for basketball, same reasoning. Bad business to mess with a monopoly Joe. If ASU wants the game bad enough, they can't whine for it, beg for it, or cry about it. They'll have to earn it. That's some 50s logic that the youth of America can use today as well.

Mr. Moderator:
Do you, ya know, consider cheerleading, like, a real sport? If so, like, why don't you, ya know, like cover it? Like, thanks.
Betsy Sue in Little Rock.
Betsy Sue:
Cheerleading is definitely a tough activity, and I give the girls credit for all the work they put into it. However, it's not a sport in my book. When I watch a football game, it's a football game, not a football/cheerleading competition. Cheerleading is an activity, a spark to light the fans up.

Moderator:
If the Great Wall of China fell on your head, would you even know it?
Doug in Dardanelle.
If it fell on my head, at that moment I think I'd be dead. It's a heavy object Doug. As for Wally, he's got a lot of air in his head, so you don't know about him. He might feel something at first.

Moderator:
New basketball Coach Stan Heath is off to a great start, what do you think we should expect as far as wins go this season?
Hoops in Hope.
Hoops:
Don't expect an instant SEC title, but do expect a lot of improvment in this team. Words can not describe what simple teamwork can do. Sure they lose Pargo, Dean, Gipson, Cleveland, etc., but I see a much better team fundamentally, and one that is more focused to succeed, in and out of the classroom, in a long long time. Expect a winning season, an NIT bid likely, maybe even the Big Dance in one year. One thing is for sure, Stan Heath will get us going in the right direction again.

Moderator:
I can't believe you are not a golfer. Why not?
Putterhead, Poyen
Putterhead:
Been a little busy to hit the links. I do play golf, but rarely. It's not the cheapest thing to do, it takes a long time (for me at least), and with my schedule, time can be tough to find.

WPS to you all, until next time

After my earlier post...read above please...more questions came in to the Moderator's mail room. Here are my responses to them....

------------------------------------------------
Dear Moderator:
You picked War Emblem to win the Belmont, and he didn't come close! Your thoughts?
Robby in Ft. Smith
Robby:
As soon as War Emblem stumbled out of the gate, I knew his day was done. He used up too much energy to get up to the lead group. I think had he not stumbled, it could've been a tight race.

Moderator:
Most fans of Arkansas State blame Frank Broyles for the troubles of their athletic program. Do you think Frank has been the reason to ASU's struggles?
Pete in Pocahontas
Pete:
No way, no see, no how. Let's be real folks. The only thing Frank Broyles did was build a nationally prominent program in the state of Arkansas. He's built a strong financial base, beautiful facilities, and has laid a foundation for athletic success for years to come.

There are many reasons as to why UA has a virtual monopoly on the state media and population. UA played games in Little Rock early..right when War Memorial Stadium was built..to lay a ground base for the state. Orville Henry was a key contributor, writing daily about the Razorbacks, while stAte got no coverage. Most important of all though...Arkansas WON. The Razorbacks won against big names and became the team to rally for in the state. The UA planned it out from that start.

ASU fans know this, yet they still want to point the finger at Frank Broyles, because he refuses to let UA play the Indians. Why in God's green earth would he?!!! That's what we call "bad business" Wally Hall says it's 50s logic, but he's wrong. That's everyday logic. Athletic programs are businesses too, and it's bad business to fool around with a good thing. To really persuade me to have that game played, ASU would need to average at least 40,000 for their home games, move to a tougher conference, and start winning games. And by the way..the way they call the UA "UAF" is just more proof of jealousy. Arkansas State fans should be nice to HOG fans and let the state support both teams instead of dividing sides. Otherwise, stAte will have no athletic program. Not Frank's fault though..it's their own.

Moderator:
Will Stan Heath be able to sign Ronnie Brewer?
Concerned in Conway
Concerned:
I said it here....YES. Heath has the personality and charisma to sign anyone he wants. Walking 1/4 mile to go sign Ronnie Brewer only helps the recruiting budget for the Razorbacks.

Moderator:
When will Vanderbilt win the SEC East title in football?
Wondering in Wynne
Wondering:
When Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky all go on football probation. Hey, UK is there and Tennessee is soon to follow. Is the dream alive in Nashville?

Moderator:
What kind of score will be needed to win golf's US Open this year?
Mark in Maumelle
Mark:
The score that will be needed is whatever Tiger Woods puts on his scorecard. What that is, I'm not sure of yet.

Moderator:
Is it true that Phil Fulmer was once a belly dancer?
Stacey, Clarksville
Stacey:
One emotion: <img border="0" alt="[Puke]" title="" src="graemlins/puke.gif" />

Til next time
